TRAUMA REGISTRY CODER
(Health Information Management Coder II)
Natividad is currently seeking a permanent full-time Trauma Registry Coder (Health Information Management Coder II) in the Trauma Services Department. Under general supervision, the incumbent will review, interpret, code and abstract medical records information according to standard classification systems; identify diagnostic categories based on medical, diagnostic and related hospital services rendered and other related patient information; review medical records for adherence to quality standards; and perform other related duties as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate:
Experience: One year of experience which has involved either work with Medical Records coding and/or billing, or the analysis/evaluation of technical reports/information to determine appropriate coding.
Education: Vocational or college level coursework in Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology OR completion of a community college, vocational school, or equivalent program in Medical Records Coding, Medical Billing and Abstracting.
Certifications/License: Possession of a national certification or registration in health information management coding from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) is highly desirable.
Working knowledge of:
- Medical record keeping principles and practices; the nature and uses of medical records charges; basic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
- Basic functions of a hospital medical records division; legal aspects of medical record administration. Knowledge and understanding of HIPAA.
- ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II coding systems and AIS (Abbreviated Injury Scale). The APC structure and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of general requirements to maintain the trauma registry and ensuring compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) standards and California Title 22 trauma requirements related to trauma data requirements and the trauma registry.
- Basic keyboard operations and the operation of standard office equipment; standard business computer hardware and software.
- Minimal knowledge of billing as it relates to modifiers.
- The business and professional relationships and ethics involved among hospitals, physicians and patients.
May be eligible for certification pay if you possess one of the following certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Professional Coder - Payer (CPC-P)
